Cervical Disc Prolapse and the problems that it entails

The herniated disc – What is it?

The disc between the vertebrae has a tough outer layer called the annulus and the gel like inner are which cushions the shock between the vertebrae. When this gel like layer collapses, this causes the herniated disc or the cervical disc prolapse. When the disc material touches or compresses a spinal nerve numbness or a tingling sensation may result in the arms. For 6 weeks rest and isolation is the first route of treatment and the patient may recover by natural healing within that time. However for deformities and severe prolapses surgical intervention may be prescribed.

The spine is made of 24 moveable bones called vertebrae. The cervical (neck) section of the spine supports the head which is approximately 10 pounds and allows you to bend your head forward and backward, from side to side, and rotate 180 degrees. There are 7 cervical vertebrae numbered C1 to C7. The vertebrae are sandwiched by discs, which are shock absorbers and prevent the bones from rubbing against one another. The outer ring of the disc is called the annulus. It has fibrous bands that attach between the bodies of each vertebra. Every disc has a gel-filled center called the nucleus. At each disc, two spinal nerves exit from the spinal cord and branch out to your body. These nerves and the spinal cord are what relay the sensations from the body to the brain and the commands from the brain to the muscles.

What is a herniated cervical disc?

A herniated disc occurs when the gel-like center of your disc ruptures out through a tear in the tough disc wall (annulus) The gel and tissue may push onto the nerves and the spine or the gel may irritate the nerve by causing a chemical reaction.Inflammation or swelling caused by the pressure applied by the herniated disc, may result in pain.

At Navaladi Endo Spine Care a wholistic approach is given to the study of the extent and severity of the prolapse and treatment is afforded accordingly. In many cases rest and relaxation with specific surgeries will help completely heal. If it is surgery, then there is the access to the best technology on offer.
