Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion

The main reason for disc degeneration is ageing. With various stages in the disc degeneration, the patient is usually aware of the issue only when the prolapse comes in contact with the nerves, which in turn, leads to extreme pain and distress. The key aspect of Mini Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion is that the surgeon approaches the issue from the lateral side and not from the posterior. TLIF is used to treat the following conditions –

Bulging disc – The disc bulges and the patient experiences severe pain, because the disc comes into contact with the nerves

Degenerative Disc Disease– The name is a misnomer as it is not exactly a disease, but is a series of degenerative events that happen as the patient grows older.

Disc Tear– When there is physical tear of the annulus and the disc seeps out into the spinal cavity.

Facet Joint Syndrome – Degenerative facet wear and tear as a result of ageing

Foraminal Stenosis – Where the foraminal cavity narrows due to deposits with old age. When the foramen gets so narrow as to impede the functioning of the nerves and the blood vessels, paralysis and pain ensue.

How is the procedure done?
The surgeon approaches the problem area laterally and fastens the vertebra above and below the disc that needs to be removed. Through state of the art technology at Navaladi Endospine Care, instruments are sent in that remove portions of the vertebra and the disc material that is the cause of the issue. Bone grafts and supporting materials are used to make the joint as good as new.
