PLIF – Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion

PLIF is a traditional Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgical Procedure where the surgeon approaches the issue from the posterior of the patient. The points of incision are determined with perfect precision using a combination fluoroscopic techniques, and surgeon prepares the patient by laying him/her on his/her stomach. The Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion surgeries are done for cases where the nerves from the spinal canal are pinched due to vertebral misalignment, excessive wear and tear, or from compression of the disc or tear/prolapse.

The incision is at best 10 mm tube through which the instruments are sent and the offending portions of the vertebrae are scraped. The extruded disc portions are also removed through the tube and the graft with the cage is inserted in place.

Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion is a traditional form of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery and the benefits is fairly instantaneous. Recovery time is nonexistent and the patient is motivated to start walking as soon as the surgical procedure draws to a close.

At Navaladi Endospine Care, the support given to the patients extend beyond the surgical procedures itself. In the case of PLIF, there is no requirement for hospitalisation. There is no scarring or scar tissue as the muscles of the back and the tissue segments therein are left untouched throughout the procedure. As a result there is no need for healing or soreness. The is no superficial scar tissue either and the patient is ready to resume normal activities almost instantaneously. The patient can also feel the difference and the reduction in pain and distress immediately upon completion of surgery.
